Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

I didn't mean to get you in trouble...

This is my problem, not yours.

I think someone forgot to update Gumshoe's lines from yesterday's mid-trial break.

Wait! Detective Gumshoe! What is it?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack

Sound: Whack

I take it Lana's having you run errands again.

Let me tell you, this is the last time, pal!

Sound: Realization

"Evidence Law"? (Edgeworth was talking about this just the other day...)

Rule 1: no evidence shall be shown without the approval of the Police Department!

I-is that right, Mr. Wright!?

It seems so.

Sound: Whack

A message?
Sound: Realization

She said, "If you're planning to take HIM on,

("Him"...)

(I guess I'll need to give this book a thorough read...)

Sound: Select Jingle

Good thing this is a video game and books are a maximum of three pages long. Also we can freeze time while perusing the Court Record.

This book has just one page, outlining the two rules themselves. I'm impressed at the callback here; I suspect these will come up when trying to nail Gant on hiding the SL-9 evidence. That second rule actually somewhat explains why we can't just present anything we want whenever we want; we have to wait until we can show its relevance first.

All that's left now is

the Chief Prosecutor's sentence.

That's where you're wrong, Detective.
Sound: Realization

Huh?
Sound: Light Bulb

Why I'm still sitting in that prosecutor's seat...

Sound: Realization

Mr. Edgeworth...

Sound: Light Bulb

Wright and Edgeworth working together to get to the truth is awesome.

Music: Silence

What!? What else is there left to do?
Sound: Whack

Ema Skye found out she unwittingly caused a man's death...

And now you're telling me you want to do more!?
Sound: Whack

Sound: Damage 2

You're missing the point, Detective.

Lana didn't murder Detective Goodman.
Sound: Realization

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

That means the real killer... is still out there.

What!?

(And we're going to expose him...)

(No matter what it takes!)

I like using Gumshoe as the stand-in for the audience for the recap here.

Mr. Edgeworth.

Yes, Your Honor?

We'll see what they say once the day is over.

Thank you for the news, Your Honor.

Yes, well... *a-hem*

I'm still amazed at how this game has made me go from hating Edgeworth's antics at the start to loving them now. Taking a bow at the judge and thanking him for the news is just such a perfect response to a bullshit inquiry like that.

but, er... *a-hem* *cough* *cough*

This isn't easy to say...

Struck a bargain?
Sound: Realization

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

Was Edgeworth manipulating Ema into ruining his reputation for him? I'm not sure this complaint makes a lot of sense here.

I didn't say that!
Sound: Whack

...

Very well, Your Honor.

I have a solution.

A solution?
Sound: Light Bulb

That being the case,

Sound: Realization

Edgeworth you magnificant asshole, way to turn that around.

Sound: Stab

Undeniably this is an unusual arrangement...

but a very effective one.

On the other hand, Edgeworth is thorough enough to strike deals with all possible witnesses anyway. But we know that won't be the case here.

Hmm...

Well, Mr. Wright? What do you say?

... (Unbelievable.)

Very well.

The defense accepts the prosecution's proposal.

Sound: Gavel

Then it's settled.

Mr. Wright.

...!
Sound: Light Bulb

If you call the wrong witness...

this trial is as good as over.

The defense calls...

(The time's finally come to bring out the real murderer!)

While it might be interesting to call on Lana and see if she'll spill the beans on Gant now, Phoenix's last line is telling us we need to go straight for Gant here. There's a penalty on this one, but it's not a tough choice anyway.

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

quote:

Picking anyone else results in disappointed Edgeworth:

Music: Silence

Sound: Desk Slam

It appears I've overestimated you, Mr. Wright.

Huh?
Sound: Light Bulb

For a moment, I actually thought you knew what you were doing. Hmph!

Mr. Wright! This court has long since tired of your questionable antics!
Sound: Whack
Sound: Damage 2

Okay, summoning Meekins to testify again deserves a penalty.

Music: Trial

(I still don't have any concrete evidence,)

(but judging by the direction everything seems to be pointing...)

(There's another, even more suspicious person!)
Sound: Realization

The defense calls...

(The time's finally come to bring out the real murderer!)

We loop back for another try at picking the next witness.

Sound: Realization
Sound: Whack

...

As the defendant's partner two years ago,

I feel we should hear what he has to say about it.

Hmm...

As luck would have it, he should still be in the courthouse.

Sound: Realization

Wouldn't you agree, Your Honor?

True...

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Witness. Please state your name and occupation.

I was just on my way to lunch!

Your name and occupation, sir.

Sound: Desk Slam

Your name and occupation!

So...

You want to play hardball, eh?
Sound: Realization

P-please, Mr. Gant.

...

Fine.
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

Acting?

Oh, Wrighto. What's with the grim face?
Sound: Light Bulb

First, let's clear up this SL-9 Incident.

Sound: Realization

This guy really doesn't realize that all his schemes are falling apart around him now.

Personally, I think it's been made pretty clear already.

There are still some things unaccounted for.

Oh? Like what?
Sound: Light Bulb

Like the role you played in all of this.

...

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

...

"Weapons"...?
Sound: Light Bulb

Sure. Take my testimony, for example.

Sound: Realization

What?
Sound: Light Bulb

Is that true?

Just in case you thought the system wasn't corrupt enough.

...

Sound: Whack

That's literally all he's been trying to do all episode.

Just remember...

Super secret double penalties at stake here, then!

Sound: Gavel

Very well. The witness may now begin his testimony.

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

As I recall, Neil and I were questioning him that day.

Apparently she had already... "arranged" the crime scene.

Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

Music: Silence

Well that last line is bullshit, and we have a couple different ways to prove it.

Him? He was lying on the floor unconscious.

Sound: Wipe

Sound: Shock 2

Sound: Shock 2

Sound: Stab 2

What an odd way to talk about Darke getting knocked unconscious.

(If the police chief has the right to refuse to testify...)

(Then I'd better hit him hard and fast!)

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

(Lana did admit to forging evidence...)

(but that can't be the whole truth.)

As I recall, Neil and I were questioning him that day.

Yes, that's right. I guess you could say I'm a workaholic...

I don't quite remember...

At the very least, she wasn't there when Darke ran for it.

To make a long story short, we slipped up. That power outage didn't help either.

So the two of you ran immediately after him, right?

so Neil and I split up.

He went upstairs and I went downstairs.

I guess you could say...

he got "lucky."
Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Clapping

Oh, that.
Sound: Whack

Well...

Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

(That's not funny...)

When I went to my office, I found Lana there.

Could you tell us what you saw?

It was a shocking sight...

Sound: Wipe

This image makes more sense knowing it was arranged like that. Those bodies don't look like they naturally fell that way.

Darke was also lying collapsed on the floor?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Light Bulb
Sound: Clapping

(Lana and Ema...)

Lana was cradling Ema in her arms.

Looking back at it now...

Sound: Realization

...!

Apparently she had already... "arranged" the crime scene.

Sound: Desk Slam

How can you know that!?

Because of the victim's body.

It had already been moved.
Sound: Realization

So that means...

Sound: Wipe

That's right.

I think you said earlier,

Sound: Drama Pound

Yes...

...

Anyway...

As you can see, I had nothing to do with the "forgery."

So you're saying...

That's exactly what I'm saying.

I can understand how Lana must have felt,

There we go, that's the line we nail him on.

(Is that how it really went down?)

Sound: Realization

!
Sound: Light Bulb

If you're going to stare at anything...

Worthy, Worthy... Always the smooth talker.
Sound: Clapping

Can't ask for a better prompt than that.

To help you out, I'm going to eliminate one of the incorrect options here. You'll see why.

Music: Silence

If you really had nothing to do with the forgery...

then how do you explain this?
Sound: Objection

Music: Investigation - Core

Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Desk Slam

Chief Gant! Your explanation, please!
Sound: Drama Pound

...

Music: Silence

I don't know.
Sound: Realization

You tell me, son.
Sound: Whack

Huh?
Sound: Light Bulb

My dear Wrighto.

Sound: Realization

(Uh-oh, not this again. Evidence law...)

Sound: Realization

Sound: Gavel

It appears...

the defense was not prepared.

Please accept my profound apologies, Chief.

Would you mind giving the defense another chance?

Sound: Whack
Sound: Clapping

Thank you. I assure you the defense is terribly sorry.
Sound: Whack

Ha ha ha...

(Yeah. Sorry I didn't nail you...)

Music: Questioning - Moderato

From there, we get brought back to the start of the cross. Notably, we do not take a penalty here. Considering my only thought on the cloth was that it was showing Ema's handprint on Neil's vest, I'm not sure how it's really going to end up getting used yet.

We still have to decide what else to present here. We're up to thirty pieces of evidence in the list now. Which one contradicts Gant's last statement?
